about

The Turn of the Screw is probably the most well-known ghost story and definitely the most ambiguous. It can be seen as a subtle, self-aware exploration of the haunted house of Victorian culture, full of echoes of sexual and social unease, or as "the most hopelessly evil story we have ever read."

The Turn of the Screw is a ghost story novella by Henry James that was first published in 1898. Different, and sometimes contradictory, ideas have been put forward about the novella. Many critics have tried to figure out exactly what kind of evil the story suggests.

Others, though, have said that the real brilliance of the novella lies in its ability to make the reader feel confused and ill at ease.

It has been adapted for the screen many times.
