about

Oscar Wilde's single most important book is a story about a young man who sells his soul to stay young and beautiful.

In this well-known work, Wilde shows how evil and debauchery destroy a young aesthete in late-19th-century England.

The book combines elements of the Gothic horror novel and decadent French fiction around a striking premise: as Dorian Gray sinks into a life of crime and gross sensuality, his body stays young and healthy, while his recently painted portrait turns into a hideous record of evil that he must hide from the world.

This scary and suspenseful story has been a favourite for over a hundred years. It is one of Wilde's most important works, and it is also one of the best works of its kind.
